Are You Doing This Because You Want to Matter or Because You Think It Matters?
.
I had the pleasure of sharing breakfast with a dear friend of mine. We’ve known each other for around two years now. She’s a brilliant businesswoman who always has multiple projects on the go, aiming for the highest peaks and never resting on her laurels. She’s also a huge fan of luxury performance cars, and whenever we get together, we spend time catching up on the changes in our lives.
As I sat across from her today, I couldn’t help but notice how vibrant and youthful she looked. Her eyes were shining, and her smile was brighter than ever before. I knew that she had something wonderful to share, and I couldn’t wait to hear it.
And then she told me. She had started a new relationship, and finally let go of a toxic one that had been weighing her down for far too long. I was ecstatic for her, and as she shared the details, I could feel my heart swelling with joy. But then she revealed something else that caught me off guard.
She told me that she used to believe that there were no good and genuine guys out there who would love her for who she was. It was a belief that had been ingrained in her due to her family background. But then, one day, she overheard a conversation between her parents that changed everything.
Her mother was expressing concern over what would happen to her daughter once they were no longer in this world. In that moment, my friend realized that her mother had always been worried about her happiness, even at her own expense. This realization made my friend feel regretful and sad, as she realized that she hadn’t been doing enough to find true happiness.
But then, something shifted within her. She began to question her own beliefs and wonder if she was wrong about there being no good guys out there. Slowly but surely, her perspective began to change, and she started to believe that there were good guys in the world, she just hadn’t found the right one yet. This small shift in her mindset set off a chain reaction that led her to the perfect match she has today.
As I listened to her story, I was overcome with emotion. To hear about her transformation and how her life had changed for the better was truly inspiring. It reminded me of a video I once saw from the Stanford Graduate School of Business about doing things because they matter, not because you want to matter.
I realized that my friend’s transformation was the perfect example of this. She didn’t make changes in her life because she wanted recognition or an award. She did it because she knew deep down that there was something better out there for her, and she wanted to find it. She cultivated a new mindset, one that focused on growth and self-improvement rather than stagnation and negativity.
It made me think about my own life and the choices I make. Am I doing things because I want to matter or because they truly matter to me? It’s a question we should all ask ourselves from time to time. We all have different motives and reasons for doing what we do, but the key is to find what truly matters to us and dedicate our lives to it.
My friend’s story is a reminder that when we do what truly matters, we won’t give up easily, no matter the hardships we face. We’ll be driven by a deep sense of purpose and fulfillment that goes beyond our own comfort or instant gratification. We’ll be inspired by the potential for growth and invigorated by the challenge of becoming better.
So, my dear reader, I implore you to ask yourself this question: Are you doing what you are doing because you want to matter or because you think it matters? Take a moment to reflect on your life and the choices you have made. Think about the goals you have set for yourself, the career path you have chosen, and the relationships you have cultivated.
It’s easy to get caught up in the expectations and opinions of others. We live in a society that values success and status, and it can be hard to resist the pressure to conform to these norms. But in doing so, we risk losing sight of what truly matters to us and living a life that is unfulfilling and empty.
Ask yourself if you are doing all of this simply to impress others or because it truly matters to you. Do you find yourself constantly seeking validation and approval from those around you, or are you content with following your own heart and pursuing what truly makes you happy?
It’s okay to admit that you may have been motivated by the desire to be accepted or to fit in. It’s a natural human instinct to want to belong and be valued by others. But it’s important to recognize that true fulfillment and happiness can only come from doing what truly matters to you, not from seeking external validation or trying to live up to other people’s expectations.
Remember that you have the power to shape your own life, and it’s never too late to make a change. If you find that you have been doing things simply to impress others or because you feel like you have to, take a step back and re-evaluate your priorities.
Think about what truly matters to you, and what you are truly passionate about. Don’t be afraid to take risks and pursue your dreams, even if they may not be the most conventional or popular choice.
At the end of the day, it’s your life and your happiness that matter the most. Don’t let the fear of failure or the opinions of others hold you back from living the life you truly deserve. Remember that you are capable of great things, and that by following your heart and doing what truly matters to you, you can make a meaningful and lasting impact on the world.
So, my dear reader, I urge you to take a leap of faith and pursue what truly matters to you. Whether it’s starting a new career, ending a toxic relationship, or embarking on a new adventure, remember that you are worth it, and that your happiness and well-being are the most important things in the world.
Never forget that you are capable of achieving great things, and that by doing what truly matters to you, you can make a positive difference in your life and in the lives of those around you. So go out there and live your life to the fullest, because to me, you truly matter.
